Dracoraptor hanigani lived in south Wales 200 million years ago

      A life-size reconstruction of a meat-eating Jurassic dinosaur has gone on display at Cardiffs National Museum.

      Dracoraptor hanigani (dragon robber), a distant cousin of Tyrannosaurus rex, roamed coastal south Wales about 200 million years ago.

      Scientists believe its body was covered in a feathery down, with quills along its back.

The creature was discovered in 2014 near Penarth, Vale of Glamorgan, by brothers Nick and Rob Hanigan.

      The new exhibit, created by Bristol-based palaeo-artist Bob Nicholls, is being displayed alongside other dinosaurs in the Evolution of Wales gallery.

      Dr Caroline Buttler, head of palaeontology at National Museum Wales, said: "The fossilised skeleton of the dinosaur which is located in the main hall has proved very popular with visitors over the past year, so its great that they can see the model up close and see what it would have really looked like."
